Proposed P2.056 billion city budget deferred

BAGUIO CITY January 11 The City Council deferred for the second time the proposed P2.056 billion annual budget of the local government this year following concerns raised against some priority development projects funded under the city's Annual Investment Plan (AIP).

While approving the proposed budgets of all the departments of the local government for this year, the local legislative body deferred action in the approval of the proposed P210 million earmarked for the construction of a multi-story pay parking facility in the vacant lot owned by the city located near the Baguio fire department and the P17 million set aside for the improvement of the perimeter of the Melvin Jones football ground that will serve as the relocation site of the night market vendors.

Baguio barangays to be reduced to 42

BAGUIO CITY January 09 – The city's Task Force on Barangay Merger reported that the current 128 barangays could be reduced to only 42 barangays once the local government successfully implements the long overdue merger of the smallest political subdivision in the bureaucracy.

Councilor Michael Lawana, chairman of the City Council Committee on Barangay Affairs and head of the Task Force on Barangay Merger, said the proposed 42 barangays for the city resulted from the numerous meetings of the task force with concerned barangay officials starting last year and that consultations are expected to continue this year until a final barangay merger plan shall have been officially adopted for implementation.

Kafagway-CAR sports international luminaries award and recognition rites set

BAGUIO CITY – The Kafagway sports international luminaries award and recognition program (KSILARP) will be held at the Silungan Center of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), Upper Session road on February 10. Athlete Stephen Loman and sportsman-coach Marques Sangiao will lead the core of awardees from the city and other parts of the Cordillera region.

Loman, a student from the University of the Cordilleras (UC) last November won the inaugural world bantamweight title in the Brave Combat Federation with a first round knock-out against Indian National Gurdarshan Mangat at the Khalifa Sports City in Bahrain. For his exemplary achievement, he will receive the prestigious NCCB Kafagway Sports "Super Athlete of the Year 2017" trophy. On the other hand, veteran sportsman-coach Sangiao who was recently named as the No. 2 Most outstanding MMA Coach in Asia, will receive the "Super Coach of the year 2017" trophy. He is the founder of Team Lakay, the mother sports organization of former ONE World Lightweight Champion Edward Folayang and other outstanding MMA warriors from the Cordillera. Sangiao is a veteran world and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist and is also a wushu coach at UC.

Ortega named to vacant council seat

BAGUIO CITY January 12 – President Rodrigo R. Duterte approved the appointment of the son of the late Councilor Roberto "Bobby" Ortega to succeed him after his untimely demise last July 30, 2917.

The appointment papers of Francisco Roberto Pacoy Ortega VI, 29, and a bonafide member of the United Nationalist Alliance 9UNA0, was signed by the President on December 29 2018 and was made available to the local government recently.

The young Ortega will serve the unexpired term of his late father as a member of the local legislative body after he was recommended by the UNA leadership to be appointed for the said post.

Slu, uc commended for achievements

BAGUIO CITY – The City Council recently commended two universities here for their latest academic pursuits.

In Resolution No. 457 series of 2017, the body cited St. Louis University for being the second top performing school of nursing during the Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE) administered in November last year as recognized by the Professional Regulation Commission.
