Council proposes social media in drug war

BAGUIO CITY – The city council on Monday tackles the proposed resolution calling for Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-CAR head Edgar Apalla to consider the use of social media in the ongoing war against drugs.

Authored by Vice-Mayor Edison Bilog, the measure proposes the use of social media and SMS blast in "initiating and undertaking its national campaign against drug abuse, prevention and control programs." Informed sources say SMS (or "text") blast is a mobile network carrier that "provides fast, reliable and most affordable means to improve communication, through bulk sending." An analysis system for detailed reports and charts for easier decision-making may also be provided through this means, it was known.

The same proposal considered electronic communication/social media site creation for users' online to share information, ideas, personal messages and others..." Bilog stated in the proposal.

Further, social media use is free, "text blast" is considered cheap and an effective conveyor of messages to the younger generation in addition to lectures and fora as education and information campaign against illegal drug use. An aggressive campaign is needed for everyone to be informed, and not be misled by unconfirmed announcements and today's proliferation of "fake news."

Further council action is awaited for the proposal. - juliegfianza
