City vet bares accomplishments

BAGUIO CITY – The city veterinary office (CVO) under Dr. Brigit Piok has inspected a total of 273,980 heads of animals and passed for slaughter in the first semester of 2017 including 4,996 tons of meat that was deemed fit for human consumption.

Her office also found 1,345 kilograms of meat unfit for human consumption that were immediately confiscated, condemned and properly disposed of.

Piok gave her report in Monday's flag-raising ceremonies at City Hall before officials and employees led by Mayor Mauricio Domogan.

She said that in the city market, 7,091 tons of meat and 5,143 tons of fish were inspected and passed for public sale.

Piok explained that a task force tasked to monitor the sale, proper and hygienic handling of meat composed of the police, public order and safety division, national meat inspection service, city treasurer's office, health services office, permits and licensing office and CVO had issued warnings to 15 violators of meat inspection rules and regulations.

The task force confiscated 262 kilograms of meat and 100 kilograms of fish that were found unfit for public sale during the period.

She pointed out that the operation and maintenance of the city slaughterhouse faces a lot of challenges where 62,719 heads of animals were slaughtered.

Piok disclosed that the city has 70 licensed butchers and of this number, four (4) were allegedly found positive of drugs and their licenses revoked and terminated. Forty-one of them were issued warnings while 10 were suspended and meted disciplinary sanctions for violating laws and city ordinances on slaughterhouse rules and regulations.

"Violations include not wearing prescribed uniform and haircut, smoking within the premises, harassment or persons in authority and violation of the animal welfare act, among others," she said.-gaby keith
